THE EVOLUTION OF TAPPING
St. Charles Herald-Guide on September 26, 2001 Slight changes
were made to the original article reflecting a name change of the system.
For the past twenty years, people everywhere
have been learning about a simple way to improve their own mental,
emotional and physical health by energetically removing mental blocks,
shifting unhealthy beliefs, etc. with simple tapping techniques.
In the early 1980s, visionary
psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan developed an innovative system he
called Thought Field Therapy (TFT), inspired by an incredible success
with his client, Mary, who'd had an intense fear of water all of her
life.
After much effort
and little success treating her with hypnosis and other then-current
tools, Dr. Callahan began studying the acupuncture meridians of the
body.
One day Mary told him that
her stomach hurt whenever she thought of water. Dr. Callahan
advised her to simply tap with her fingertips under her eyes (a spot
on the stomach meridian). To their mutual amazement, Mary's fear
vanished immediately, and she remains phobia-free today.
Following this accidental discovery,
Dr. Callahan defined his work to include more than twenty therapeutic
tapping sequences involving 14 acupuncture points on the body,
corresponding to the 12 major meridians and two of the minor meridians.
His TFT routines include various combinations of fingertip
taps on specific acupuncture points on the body and certain eye
movements, with a verbal component of speaking certain phrases
aloud.
Dr. Callahan's TFT
routines are today well-documented as highly effective techniques
to address obsession, anger, rage, guilt, depression, allergy
reactions, nasal congestion, panic/anxiety attacks, trauma, phobia
and other problems. However, as is always the case with
trailblazers, he was initially outcast by his psychologist colleagues.
(I am just glad that he persevered!)
Dr. Callahan's many appearances on
numerous television shows and radio broadcasts have dramatically
convinced skeptical audiences of the benefits of his work.
These experiences over the years as well as the many books he
authored have helped him establish a strong acceptance of and
appreciation for his revolutionary work.
In August 1997, my partner and I
were very excited to be able to be personally trained by Dr.
Callahan and his wife Joanne in Indian Wells, California.
They taught us the TFT diagnostic techniques and procedures, which
allowed us to identify unique tapping sequences for more
challenging problems.
Upon completion of this advanced
program, we became certified practitioners with the "TFTdx"
designation. At that time, only 200 people worldwide had
been trained at this level, and we were the only ones in Louisiana.
I was the only lay person in the group, which also consisted
of MD's, PhD's, Social Workers and other professionals from the
United States, Canada, France, Japan and Australia.
During our training, we also learned
about the latest dimension of Dr. Callahan's TFT system, Voice
Technology (VT) which allows TFT practitioners to work with
clients over the phone. Dr. Callahan is successfully
treating patients worldwide with this system and is assisting
TFT practitioners over the phone with difficult cases.
One of the first people to purchase
this Voice Technology was Gary Craig, a Stanford engineer.
After using the VT for a while, he developed a tapping system
of his own called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).
His underlying theory was that "the cause of all negative
emotions is a disruption in the body's energy
system." The EFT system includes tapping on 12
acupuncture points and repeating reminder phrases about your
problem aloud. Mr. Craig believed that this sequence of
tapping would balance one's energy system; he recommends it as
a potential solution to any challenge.
Today his simple self-administered
EFT tapping technique is being utilized by thousands of
practitioners across the world. The EFT website
extensively documents relief in many areas, including weight
loss, pain relief, sports performance, behavior problems,
illnesses like ADD and fibromyalgia and much more.
Mr. Craig has definitely
enhanced public awareness about the tapping techniques.
He has been a true pioneer in furthering acceptance
of this work at all levels, even though he had no previous
medical background.
I've also recently discovered
a wonderful book called Instant
Emotional Healing, written by Dr.
Peter Lambrou and Dr. George Pratt, practicing physicians
at the prestigious Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla,
California. Their book describes a 95% success
rate with these techniques in treating more than six
thousand patients, including business executives,
professional athletes and celebrities.
With such documented
successes over the past 20 years, the tapping techniques
of Thought Field Therapy and related systems are
indisputably powerful tools to deal with all challenges
in life. I am constantly grateful for my training
in these programs and the opportunity to use them to
my own clients' benefit. In my article next week,
I will explain how the
Changing Lives Energetic Balancing System
uses our unique tapping techniques with
our clients.
The Changing Lives Energetic
Balancing System is a
comprehensive system combining many cutting edge
technologies and including tapping, Colorpuncture,
